LaDawna
Whiteside is inspired by
her birthplace, the state
of Oklahoma, for its Native
American as well as its
country and western culture.
Additionally, the ground
she has covered for the
past forty years-the agrarian
culture of Arkansas, its
native woodlands and the
grace of its people inform
her work. At this stage,
her marks and craftsmanship
analyze abstract expressionist
and folk languages seen
in the work of Helen Frankenthaler,
Agnes Martin, as well as
Clementine Hunter. She communicates
visually about subjects
in nature, animal architecture
and the topographical landforms
familiar to the Southern
United States. In this vein,
her work also explores our
commonality, how we relate
to nature, as well as our
responsibility toward it
and each other.
After
attaining a Bachelor of
Arts degree from the University
of Arkansas at Little
Rock where she graduated
in 2000, she spent almost
a decade independently
honing her skills in drawing,
painting and design. She
hopes her efforts contribute
to discourse that will
lead to human connectivity
and help build cultural
bridges toward a global
society concerned for
humanity.
